Colon and Semicolon : Punctuation Marks | Written English

Colons and semicolons both are punctuation marks that are very helpful in English writing. Punctuation marks knowledge is very important for English writing because without these marks the meaning of the sentence could be changed or the sentence could be meaningless. Placing these punctuation marks in right place and after the right word is very important. A right punctuation mark in the right place is essential otherwise the whole meaning of the sentence could be changed.

Friends Punctuation Mark का हमे सही एवं उचित तरीके से उपयोग करना चाहिए . यदि वाक्य में इसका प्रयोग सही स्थान पर न हुआ तो हो सकता है कि वाक्य का पूरा अर्थ ही बदल जाए . ऐसे में वह वाक्य अर्थहीन हो सकता है . इसलिए विराम चिन्ह का प्रयोग कैसे किया जाता है , इसकी जानकारी होना जरुरी है .

हमने पिछले Post में Period, Exclamation, Question Mark, Quotaton mark जैसे विराम चिन्हों के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त की थी . आज के इस Post में हम लोग Colon & Semicolon के बारे में पढेंगें.

Colon and Semicolon :

Colons and semicolons both are Punctuation marks.

Colon:

Colon is a punctuation mark in the English language & it is indicated by a sign ( : ). In the Hindi language, it is called “अपूर्ण विराम “. Colon is used in sentences when making lists.

English Writing में जब हमे किसी लिस्ट की जानकारी या किसी कहे Quote की लिस्ट देनी होती है तब ऐसे वाक्य में हम Colon (:) का प्रयोग करते हैं .

English Writing में Colon ( 🙂 का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब किसी प्रकार की सूचि दिखानी होती है अथवा यह दर्शाना होता है कि colon के बाद का शब्द या वाक्य , colon के पहले वाक्य का विस्तार , व्याख्या या सूची या उदहारण है .

 

Introduce things or list:

A colon ( : )  is used to introduce an item, list, or quotation. e.g.

  • You know what to do for the exam: Reading, Writing, & Practice.
  • You know there are many things in the market: Books, Bags, bats, Ball, Doll, Cycle.
  • Sameer said it best: “To be or not to be”
Introduce an explanation:

A Colon is used to introduce an explanation in sentences.

  • She had only one aim: to clear his IAS exam.
  • He gets married early: His dad wanted a daughter-in-law.
  • I need to buy a few things at the store: milk, bread, and eggs.
To Separate Hours & Minutes in time :

Colon is also used while expressing hours and minutes in time.

  • The train will depart at 4:35 PM.
  • I think they should come before 10.15 AM.

Semicolon:

दोस्तों Semicolon को हिंदी में अर्धविराम कहा जाता है . इसका  प्रयोग किसी भी वाक्य में दो Complete sentences अथवा Related sentences को Connect करने के लिए किया जाता है . Semicolon को express करने के लिए ( ; )  चिन्ह का प्रयोग करते हैं .

Semicolon is also a punctuation mark & it is expressed by sign ( ; ). It’s used for connecting two complete sentences or related sentences.    e.g.

यंहा पर एक example देखते हैं – Trisha finished her assigment ( Trisha ने अपना assignment पूर्ण कर लिया ) और दूसरा वाक्य है – Satyam did not finish his. (सत्यम ने अपना फिनिश नहीं किया है ). इन दोनों वाक्यों को एक वाक्य में बनाने के लिए हम Semicolon का प्रयोग करेंगें.

  • Trisha finished her assignment; Satyam did not finish his.
  • Let’s play cricket today; tomorrow I have to work.
  • His increment is pending; Rahul gets a 15% increment.
  • There are three types of triangles; Equilateral, Isosceles, and scalene.
  • We all are going to our native place; Trisha, Rahul, Satyam & Rakesh.
